Nov. 8 marked a controversial milestone for Manitoba taxpayers – the NDP government has now collected $100 million as a result of the PST hike.
In a news release, the opposition Progressive Conservatives argued the PST hike is “illegal” since the bill to adopt it into law has not been approved by the legislature.
“We continue to challenge the NDP PST hike. We want people to know this fight is far from over,” said Opposition Leader Brian Pallister in a news release.
The NDP will see increases to the province’s bottom line of over 17 per cent between now and the next election, says the opposition.
Even without an increase to the PST, revenue would still have grown by over 13 per cent in the next two years, the PCs said.
The NDP has defended the one-point PST increase, which took effect July 1, as a means of revamping crumbling infrastructure.
Manitoba’s PST is now eight per cent.
