A Saskatchewan-wide ban on pruning elm trees is in place as the province aims to curb the spread of Dutch elm disease. The disease clogs the water conducting system of a tree, which can prevent food and nutrients from reaching the leaves. The fungus can kill a tree in a matter of weeks. Dutch elm disease can be spread from tree to tree by elm bark beetles. The pruning ban is in effect because these insects are attracted to freshly cut branches and the scent of sap. Saskatchewan environmental workers believe the disease reached the province years ago from the eastern part of the continent. The pruning ban remains in effect until July 31.4/22/2004
