Incoming federal rules for cell phone companies have the support of the Manitoba government. The national communications regulator, the CRTC, has announced that new rules will apply to cell phone and mobile contracts starting on Dec. 2. The CRTCâ??s Wireless Code will complement Manitobaâ??s cell phone and mobile device legislation and further enhance protections by providing consumers with the right: â?Âto cancel contracts at no cost after a maximum of two years, regardless of the length of agreement; â?Âto limit extra data charges to $50 per month and international roaming charges at $100; â? to have phones unlocked after 90 days or immediately if the phone was paid in full; â?Âto pay no extra charges for a service described as unlimited; â?Âto have services suspended at no cost if a phone is lost or stolen; and â?Âto have the contract in an alternative format at no charge and a longer (30-day) trial period for anyone with a disability. Manitoba has introduced its own cellphone legislation to address issues that were within its provincial jurisdiction.
