The trend may not extend to Creighton and Denare Beach, but the overall value of property in Saskatchewan has soared by 67 per cent over the past four years. Overall, the assessment of property in Saskatchewan has grown from $58 billion in 2009 to $97 billion in the 2013 revaluation year, according to the provincial government. Government Relations Minister Jim Reiter attempted to make political hay out of the figure, saying the 'huge increase shows the strength of Saskatchewan's economy.' While higher property values are viewed as a positive economic sign, they also often mean homeowners face higher property taxes, as taxes are levied according to assessed value. Individual municipalities set the municipal portion of property taxes, while the provincial government sets the education portion, which funds K-12 education. Reiter said the province will need to take a close look at the potential impact of the dramatic increase in property assessments on taxpayers. 'It is up to our government, along with strong leadership from municipal governments, to take a thoughtful approach in order to mitigate property tax increases as a result of revaluation,' he said. 'We will be doing that as part of the current budget process.' _ Compiled from a Government of Saskatchewan news release
