The NDP government is partnering with a gay-rights group to develop a resource guide that will help Manitoba schools establish organizations known as gay-straight alliances. Education Minister Nancy Allan announced the partnership with Egale Canada Human Rights Trust on Monday. She said the partnership supports a new provincial law that will mandate all public schools accommodate students who want to form gay-straight alliances. GSAs, as they are known, are school-based organizations that bring together straight and gay students. The number of GSAs in Manitoba has grown quickly in recent years, from two in 2009 to about 60 that operate or are being developed this year. The province will partner with Egale to develop a resource guide called Safe and Caring Schools: A Resource for Equity and Inclusion in Manitoba schools. This guide will provide foundational resources and contain specific sections with information tailored to youth, educators, guidance counsellors and administrators in high schools. It will also provide directories and references relating to role models, symbols, terms and concepts, and community services. _ Compiled from a Government of Manitoba news release
