Jonathon Naylor Editor For Barb and Allan Link, there was more than luck at play in their winning The Reminder's Movember contest. Throughout November, The Reminder, along with several sponsors, urged residents to donate at least $25 to the Flin Flon Fire Department's Movember campaign. As an added incentive, one lucky donor would be randomly selected to receive a $250 gift certificate from the sponsor of their choice. The Links were eager to support the fire department's fight against prostate cancer. Earlier this year, they lost their son-in-law, Dustin Thompson, to another form of the disease. Thompson was a popular firefighter, and it was his cancer that motivated the fire department to participate in Movember, which sees men collect pledges to grow mustaches. Barb believes Thompson, who passed away in June, pulled a few heavenly strings to see the gift certificate go to his in-laws as an early Christmas present. 'It's another sign that he's with us,' she says. 'I think he kind of had a good chuckle over that one.' Fittingly, the Links made their donation to Dustin's firefighter brother, Aaron Thompson. The Links chose to take their $250 gift certificate from Northland Ford, likely putting it toward oil changes or car detailing. Other sponsors of The Reminder's Movember contest were RBC; Reliance Services; Flin Flon Credit Union; City of Flin Flon; MLA Clarence Pettersen; Royal Hotel; Stittco Energy Ltd.; Gunn Sound and Light; McMunn and Yates; Major Drilling; Dadson Funeral Home and Crematorium; Pharmasave; AJ's Maintenance; McKeen's Trucking; The Tire Shop; Jim's Custom Doors and Windows; Chicken Chef; and The Reminder itself. All told, the fire department raised an astounding $11,021 for Movember, funds that will be used in the ongoing battle against prostate cancer. That ranked the department eighth among all participating fire departments in Canada, ahead of departments in cities such as Toronto, Winnipeg and Saskatoon.
