Jonathon Naylor Editor Premier Greg Selinger is welcoming Flin Flon NDP candidate Clarence Pettersen to the party's reelection effort. Pettersen, a teacher and small-business owner, secured the party nomination last weekend by defeating Tom Lindsey and Leslie Beck on the first ballot. "We are excited to see Clarence win the nomination against two other quality candidates," Selinger said in an NDP news release. "The interest in this constituency is evidence that the party is strong, and we are ready to fight for the issues the Manitoba families care about." 'Proud' For his part, Pettersen said in the release that he is "proud to carry on the strong tradition of NDP representation in Flin Flon." He said he is "ready to work hard to ensure the improvements we've made in workplace safety, health care, education, and other programs we care about are not torn apart by" Progressive Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen. "I believe Manitoba is on the right track thanks to the smart, steady leadership of Greg Selinger," added Pettersen, the heavy favourite to succeed the retiring Gerard Jennissen as MLA. A Flin Flon native, Pettersen has been a teacher for 30 years, currently at Many Faces Education Centre. Along with his wife, he also runs a business selling infant carriers. He is the 21st MLA hopeful to be nominated by the NDP ahead of the Oct. 4 election. Neither the Progressive Conservatives nor the Liberals have selected candidates for the Flin Flon Constituency. Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard is scheduled to be in the area shortly to speak with people who have shown an interest in representing the party.
