The opposition Progressive Conservatives are accusing Premier Greg Selinger of doublespeak on gas prices. On April 4, Selinger discussed rising gas prices on CJOB radio, calling them 'brutal.' 'You gotta wonder what's going on,' he told the radio station. 'Apparently the industry is saying it's because they're switching from winter to spring gas, which doesn't sound very credible and we're going to write a letter to the federal government asking them to review it under the Competition Act. I mean, what's going on across this country? They're skyrocketing everywhere.' Less than two weeks later, Selinger's government unveiled a budget that raises provincial gas taxes by 2.5 cents a litre. 'Either Greg Selinger wrote that letter (to the federal government), in yet another act of breathtaking hypocrisy, or he never actually wrote a letter, proving once again that he will say just anything,' said PC Deputy Leader Kelvin Goertzen. 'Manitobans deserve to know which scenario applies. As the long weekend arrives, and Manitobans prepare to pay even higher prices for gas thanks to the broken promises by the NDP leader, I'm sure they are all wondering what happened to his promise.' _ Compiled from a Manitoba PC Party news release
