Prediction on Hudbay lawsuits

The odds don’t look good for Hudbay in lawsuits stemming from alleged violence in Guatemala, says an official with a human rights advocacy group.

The odds don’t look good for Hudbay in lawsuits stemming from alleged violence in Guatemala, says an official with a human rights advocacy group.
Matt Eisenbrandt, legal director for the Canadian Centre for International Justice, made the comment at a recent hearing on Canadian mining activities in Latin America, reports Jennifer Moore of Rabble.ca.
Eisenbrandt “relayed optimism about potential outcomes” of ongoing lawsuits against Hudbay and a BC company also accused of wrongdoing in Guatemala, writes Moore.
Three lawsuits relating to the Fenix nickel project formerly owned by Hudbay seek a combined total of $55 million in damages from the company.
The lawsuits allege security forces at the mine site gang-raped women, murdered a community leader and shot and paralyzed a young father.
Hudbay denies any wrongdoing and has reportedly filed its defence. None of the charges have been proven in court.
