Jonathon Naylor Editor It may be intended as a prank, but Fire Chief Jim Petrie certainly isn't laughing. Last Saturday, Sept. 3, someone activated the pull-station fire alarm at the Green St. apartments for no apparent reason. Petrie said such incidents, classified by the fire department as vandalism, are "extremely dangerous." He said false alarms of this nature are rare in Flin Flon but stressed that perpetrators, if caught, can be charged and fined. Pull-station vandalism is one of the most frustrating crimes for firefighters across North America, if not the world. Not only can these false alarms divert firefighting resources from legitimate calls, they may also create a sense of panic as residents flee the premises. There are also concerns that if a building is repeatedly targeted, its occupants will come to expect an alarm is false Ð even if that is not the case. The pull station at the apartment complex was pulled at 10:35 a.m. Also over the long weekend, firefighters responded to a small bush fire the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 4. The fire occurred just outside city limits on the Cliff Lake Road. It is possible it was deliberately set.9/9/11
