If a disagreement between a biopharmaceutical company and Hudbay hadn't expelled medical pot production from Flin Flon, the federal government eventually would have. Reuters reports that starting next year, Health Canada will no longer produce marijuana as it has since 2001. Nor will private homes be able to obtain a license to grow pot for medicinal purposes. Instead, patients will order all sanctioned pot from licensed growers in the private sector. More than 30,000 Canadians can legally possess and use pot, according to Reuters. They have ailments ranging from AIDS to cancer. B etween 2001 and 2009, Health Canada contracted a private company, Prairie Plant Systems, to grow medicinal marijuana in an abandoned portion of the Trout Lake mine outside Flin Flon. While PPS wanted to stay in Flin Flon beyond 2009, the company was unable to secure an extension with Hudbay. PPS continued to grow marijuana at an undisclosed location.
