Youngsters in Creighton and Denare Beach could have a daycare to call their own as early as September. A small group of volunteers has a commitment of $50,000 (for capital costs) from the KidsFirst North program to launch a daycare in Creighton. Bev McCrimmon, one of the volunteers, says the daycare will most likely go ahead provided enough parents step forward to form a board of directors. "If there's an interested board, it looks very feasible," she says, adding that a board of parents is required for all Saskatchewan daycares. No location has been finalized, though a couple of undisclosed locations are being considered. If an appropriate existing facility cannot be found, a new building could be constructed. Should an existing building be located, McCrimmon hopes the daycare, featuring up to 41 spots for children aged six and under, would open this September. McCrimmon says the need for this project is evident, referencing a 2002 survey that found Creighton and Denare Beach residents felt a daycare was their biggest need in terms of child care services. She says many children from the communities attend daycare in Flin Flon or go to a babysitter, while some parents choose to stay home because they aren't able to find available daycare spots. McCrimmon encourages anyone interested in this project to attend a meeting at Creighton Community School this Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. For more information, phone Bev at 688-2921.1/13/2005
