Political scientists says NDP will ‘probably’ retain northern Manitoba

A political scientist believes the struggling Manitoba NDP can still count on support from its “two norths” – northern Manitoba and Winnipeg’s North End.

Christopher Adams of St. Paul’s College at the University of Manitoba made the statement in a recent opinion piece in the Winnipeg Free Press.

“The way back for the NDP is to hold their support in the two norths, which they will probably do,” he wrote, “and win back support in the swing constituencies that border on the northern portion of the province: Dauphin, Interlake and Gimli. But they also need to win back urban voters, especially women, to keep seats in south and west Winnipeg.”

The NDP won all four northern Manitoba seats, including Flin Flon, in 2011, but provincewide is far behind the Progressive Conservatives in opinion polls.
