Flin Flon RCMP
are urging residents to lock their car
doors as unknown perpetrators rummage through and steal from parked vehicles.
For the week ended this past Sunday, Aug. 24, police fielded six complaints involving illegal entry into vehicles across the community.
On Waldron Avenue, police were notified of two youth going through a vehicle but were unable to locate the suspects.
It’s unclear whether they were the same youth, reported to be between the ages of 12 and 14, later spotted going through vehicles on Centre Street.
Also unsolved are thefts from vehicles on Queen Street and Evans Avenue, and a case of youth rummaging through vehicles at Aspen Grove.
Another report came of a vehicle having been searched on Riverside Drive, but there was no indication whether youth were responsible.
Vandalism
RCMP also responded to reports of vandalism to vehicles on Third Avenue and Callinan Street.
Police are seeking tips from the public in relation to these incidents and say the parents of any youth committing such acts could be held financially liable for losses and damages.
In addition to lockin car doors, police urge the public to ensure valuables are removed from their vehicles.
Across the border, Sgt. Mark Svaren of the Creighton RCMP said there have been some incidents of vehicles being entered but “certainly not on the regular basis that Flin Flon has been seeing.”
Svaren said a wallet was stolen from a vehicle on Creighton’s Main Street last week, but it was later found nearby with nothing believed to have been stolen.
In Denare Beach, tires on at least 14 vehicles were slashed in a single night in April. RCMP have since arrested four male youths, all from Denare Beach, in connection with the vandalism.
Overall, reported break and enters in Flin Flon increased 37 per cent (48 incidents from 35) in 2013. That gave Flin Flon a higher per-capita break-in rate than either The Pas or Thompson.
The actual theft of vehicles remained rare last year, with seven reported incidents in Flin Flon, up from five in 2012.
