Churchill incumbent NDP MP Bev Desjarlais officially announced this week, at the annual NDP Caucus retreat in Ottawa, that she has once again been chosen to represent the NDP in Churchill. "I am pleased by the support I have received from both the New Democrats in the Churchill riding, and throughout the country," Desjarlais stated. "I am dedicated to the needs and concerns of my constituents and I enjoy the challenges and rewards of representing such a large and diverse riding," said Desjarlais shortly after a series of caucus meetings that took place in Ottawa this week. "It is an honour to continue representing the New Democratic Party in the Churchill riding," she added. Ms. Desjarlais believes that the fast approaching election will be an exciting one. "I think what people really want is a greater NDP presence at the federal level. The NDP will be the party to watch in the upcoming election, we are a party on the move," said Desjarlais. It is still unclear whom Ms. Desjarlais will be facing in the upcoming election. So far only one candidate has indicated his intention to run for the nomination of the Liberal party. "Canadians are ready for a change," argued Desjarlais. "People in this country want investment in their communities, in health care, the environment, and education. Canadians have indicated that the NDP is the party they trust to provide the solutions on these issues." Under the current boundaries, the Churchill riding stretches from Manitoba's northern border to the Pine Falls-Fort Alexander area. Since her re-election, Desjarlais has continued to work hard to represent her constituents in Ottawa while remaining as accessible as possible by visiting the many communities throughout the riding, no matter how remote. Desjarlais has three full-service constituency offices in Thompson, The Pas, and Sagkeeng, and provides a toll-free number for her constituents allowing them to call her from anywhere in Manitoba.
