In October 2011, a drunken Ernest Meeres gave three women an hours-long ride home from a Flin Flon bar.

It was the last ride two of the women would ever take.

Now, after initially pleading guilty to impaired driving causing death, Meeres, 52, has reversed his plea, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.

Meeres’s case is headed to trial because he now says one of the women grabbed the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash, according to the newspaper.

Neither Meeres nor the women were Flin Flon residents. The crash occurred on Highway 10 north of Swan River.

The two women who died were aged 21 and 23, while the third woman, as well as Meeres, suffered injuries, the Free Press reports.
