Jonathon Naylor Editor Construction is scheduled to begin this spring or early summer on Snow Lake's planned bioleach plant. BacTech Environmental Corp. made the announcement after recently hiring California-based Tetra Tech to provide front end engineering design. The Toronto-based BacTech, which had originally hoped to start construction last year, now says construction will start in the second quarter of this year. Work on the engineering design was to commence immediately and is slated to wrap up before March 31. David Salari, chief operating officer for BacTech, called the hiring of Tetra Tech 'a major step forward' for the bioleach plant. 'We are very pleased that Tetra Tech will be working in conjunction with our in-house technical team on this phase of the project,' he added in a news release. The release made no mention of an opening date for the plant. BacTech's bioleach plant will neutralize and extract gold from mine tailings in Snow Lake. The hope is to then use the facility to treat and recover metals from other tailings scattered throughout northern Manitoba. BacTech expects to spend $18 million to $20 million to construct the new-to-North America plant.
