Jonathon Naylor Editor A plumber attempting to thaw frozen pipes with a torch inadvertently sparked a minor fire at a downtown home last month. It was one of six call-outs for the Flin Flon Fire Dept. in December, as detailed in Fire Chief Jim Petrie's monthly report to city council. After being called to a Church Street residence the morning of Dec. 17, firefighters located a fire in the crawlspace under the home. Petrie and six other firefighters extinguished the flames before ventilating the home. Petrie determined the cause as the plumber thawing pipes within the crawlspace. Other call-outs in December consisted of: Dec. 5, 2:01 PM: A caller stated there was a fire across from the SPCA animal shelter off the Perimetre Highway. Upon arrival, firefighters found and extinguished two small fires. The fire chief and one firefighter responded. Dec. 11, 1:30 AM: A caller stated smoke was coming into a residence on Kingsway Boulevard. Upon arrival, the on-call officer determined the smoke was coming from a wood-burning appliance at another home. The on-call officer responded alone. Dec. 11, 7:30 AM: A caller stated smoke or steam could be seen coming from a business at the Flintoba Shopping Centre. Upon arrival, the fire chief determined the smoke was from the heating system exhaust mixing with the -34 degree weather. The fire chief responded alone. Dec. 11, 9 AM: A caller stated there was a smell of propane on Channing Drive. Upon arrival, the fire chief determined that a weak smell of propane could be observed. The fire chief responded alone. Dec. 15, 8:20 PM: A caller stated the alarm system had been activated at the Adams Street apartments. Upon arrival, firefighters determined the cause of the alarm was from burned food on the third floor. The fire chief and 12 firefighters responded.
