A piece of Flin Flon officially belongs to the future. A time capsule of items representing modern-day Flin Flon was stocked and sealed near the Station Museum over the weekend. 'We're very happy to be here today with this exciting moment in Flin Flon's history,' Brenda Russell of the volunteer organizing committee told dozens of people gathered at the museum grounds this past Sunday, Aug. 18. The capsule, a section of concrete pipe with a concrete lid, is partially buried and surrounded by limestone adjacent to the Flintabattey Flonatin statue. With spectators watching eagerly, the committee's Tim Babcock stepped into the capsule as fellow committee members passed him plastic containers containing more than 100 items. Diverse As diverse as they are interesting, the items included a window speaker from the Big Island Drive-In Theatre, souvenir coins, photos, newspapers, and sealed letters. 'Each item is unique and personal,' said Russell. One by one Babcock lowered the containers into their place. It will be another 20 years, on Flin Flon's 100th anniversary, before anyone sees them again. Backhoe operator Bill Rasmussen, with the help of the committee's Rick Bacon, soon lowered the roughly 400-lb. concrete lid into place. Among those watching was Mayor George Fontaine, who contributed a sealed letter addressed to whomever his successor is in 2033. 'One of the neatest things about this time capsule...is thinking about what it's going to be like in 20 years to see some of these mementoes and how people are going to view them 20 years later,' Mayor Fontaine told the crowd. 'I'm wondering how many of the same people will be here to do that. Gee, I hope I'm one of them. It might be fun to see that stuff come up.' See 'Album' on pg. Continued from pg. The capsule is topped with a copper plate, engraved by local artist Doug Dmytriw. It notes that the capsule was sealed 'On the occasion of the 80th Birthday of The City of Flin Flon.' Work on the plate began when the committee planned to seal the capsule on Aug. 8, the actual 80th anniversary of the incorporation of Flin Flon. As such, the plate gives the date of sealing as Aug. 8, 2013 _ though information inside the capsule reveals that the actual date was Aug. 18. Before and after the sealing, the organizing committee posed for photos with the capsule. They are Brenda Russell, Colleen Arnold, Barb Hopkinson, Tim Babcock, Diane O'Brien, Jonathon Naylor, Crystal Kolt and Rick Bacon. The items in the capsule are: 1.
