Impaired drivers in Saskatchewan are about to face much stiffer penalties.
Changes to the province’s existing impaired driving laws will go into effect on Sept. 1. The changes beef up current penalties for repeat offenders and people who drive after using drugs.
A person convicted of drug-impaired driving will now face an immediate licence suspension and have their vehicle seized, and will be suspended from driving for up to five years.
In a news release, SGI described new policies for drug-impaired driving as “zero tolerance,” adding all drivers, regardless of experience, will face an immediate vehicle seizure and licence suspension if caught driving high.
In addition, any driver caught driving impaired while transporting a minor under the age of 16 will face longer suspensions and vehicle seizures. New drivers caught under these rules will face a suspension lasting up to 18 months.
