A sit-in has closed the Pelican Narrows band office as protesters demand a higher share of provincial tax refunds. Chief Ron Michel told CBC he may take legal action, saying it's fine for protesters to sit outside government buildings, but not inside. The demonstration began last week with protesters stating that Pelican Narrows residents are not receiving their fair share of gas and tobacco taxes, which are refunded to aboriginal bands by the Saskatchewan government. Residents age 60 and under each reportedly get $150, with older people receiving a bit more. That's lower than other First Nation communities because Pelican Narrows puts half of its refund money into an emergency fund, according to CBC. Pelican Narrows is located 120 kilometres northwest of Flin Flon.
