The forest fires near Pelican Narrows are now listed as fully controlled and extinguished.

As of Monday afternoon, Saskatchewan Wildfire Management considered both major fires – the Preston fire and Granite fire – to be fully “out”.

The fires began in early August after a series of lightning strikes ignited dry northern forests. The fires grew, affecting around 200,000 hectares of forest, shutting down large portions of Highways 106 and 135 and causing evacuations for communities in the area.

Only one fire, located north of Lac La Ronge, is still considered “not contained” by Wildfire Management as of Monday afternoon.
