Jonathon Naylor Editor Residents can help fund a major recreational project with a simple click of a mouse. The Queen's Park redevelopment is among more than 1,200 Canadian projects being considered for financial support from the Aviva Community Fund. Visitors to the website of Aviva Insurance, the fund's sponsor, can cast votes for projects they feel are deserving. Blaine Veitch, superintendent of the Flin Flon School Division, which is behind the Queen's Park work, has nominated the project. He is seeking $100,000 to $150,000. 'Hapnot Collegiate and the Many Faces Education Centre have had an undeveloped greenspace next to the schools for many years,' reads website's description of the project. 'This greenspace _ called Queen's Park _ has been recently purchased by the Flin Flon School Division and is being redeveloped. The first phase will include a soccer field, running track and skateboard park. The second phase plans to develop a basketball, beach volleyball and tennis courts and a skating rink. The student and visitor parking and school bus loading zones will also be redesigned. Final phases call for the development of a amphitheatre and outdoor classroom.' The second of three qualifying rounds of voting on projects is underway until Nov. 5. The third round runs from Nov. 12-26, with the semi-finals going from Dec. 3-12. A panel of judges will choose 30 finalists and decide which ones receive full funding. The big announcement will be made on Jan. 29, 2013. As of last Friday, the Queen's Park project had accumulated 216 votes. By contrast, the most popular projects had over 3,300 tallies.
