Jonathon Naylor Editor Years of proposing, planning and fundraising have all come down to this. The wooden barricades around Pioneer Square were to be removed over the weekend, revealing the community's latest elegant gathering place. "I would like to encourage people to make their way to that park, see it, appreciate all the work that went into it and then use it," Mayor George Fontaine said at last week's council meeting. "It belongs to the people of this community. It was brought in for a variety of reasons, but one of the big ones was to commemorate the founding families of this town and the people who put us in the position that we're in." Accepts gift His comments came shortly after council unanimously approved a motion to accept the property Ð 139 Main Street, the former home of Mr. Ribs Restaurant Ð as a gift from an anonymous donor. But tax dollars did not bring Pioneer Square from concept to reality. Instead, a volunteer committee of the Chamber of Commerce took on the project, raising nearly $220,000. A VIP tour of the site took place Saturday, after The Reminder went to press, with dignitaries expected to congratulate the committee. In his comments last week, Mayor Fontaine commended the committee and said Pioneer Square is "going to be a beautiful place." Though the first phase of work was to have been completed, some secondary work is still scheduled. The Reminder will have more on the park opening Wednesday.
