When Dr. Ted Jablonski sees patients suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, he knows all too well what they are enduring. Fortunately, he also knows how to help them, as he has learned to overcome his own SAD symptoms to lead a satisfying life. The Calgary-based physician is one of millions of North Americans living with SAD, also known as seasonal major depressive disorder. SAD is a form of depression that starts in the fall and winter and subsides in the spring and summer. People living in northern latitudes, such as Flin Flon, are more susceptible than the general population due to the lower amount of sunlight. Symptoms include negative mood swings, loss of interest and appetite, changes to sleep patterns, difficulty thinking and feelings of guilt, worthlessness or even suicidal thoughts. "Winters have always been a difficult time for mood and interest," says Dr. Jablonski, describing his symptoms. Never one to give up, Dr. Jablonski has taken a front-line position in the battle against SAD. He is the driving force behind SAD No More, a cross-Canada campaign to raise awareness as well as hope. He will soon be in Flin Flon to deliver four free workshops on the disorder and how it can be successfully treated. One private session is dedicated to meeting with our physicians, the other three sessions are open to everyone. The two sessions during the day are somewhat more technical and there is also a public forum in the evening. Dr. Jablonski is hoping for as large a turnout as possible. His own treatment regime is multifaceted. It includes bright-light therapy, medication, regular exercise, a strict diet, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty fish oil supplements, and a dedication to activities he loves. "This healthy combination approach has changed my life and made winter bearable," says Dr. Jablonski. "I have never felt better."
