The federal government has pledged more than half a million dollars to help University College of the North establish an industrial skills and trades training centre in Thompson.
Navdeep Bains, minister of innovation, science and economic development, announced last week that UCN will receive $574,000 for the centre.
“The government is investing in students and post-secondary institutions like UCN, so that the next generation of Canadians will be well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the future,” Bains said in a news release.
The centre will be operated in partnership with the School District of Mystery Lake and is also being supported by nickel miner Vale, Thompson’s primary employer.
The centre is to accommodate 126 apprentice/post-secondary students and 50 to 60 high school students. It will include a heavy-duty equipment mechanics shop and trades technology programming.
