Mayor George Fontaine
I have lived in Flin Flon since 1972. My wife Nora and I raised three children in Flin Flon. I taught school, mostly industrial arts, for the Flin Flon School Division. I first served on city council for four years with recreation as my main charge, then served the next four years as mayor of this fine city. I’m letting my name stand for a
second term.
I love this community, which has provided so much for my family and families like ours. It’s been a safe place to raise kids as well as offering a wide array of opportunities for experiences for young people. From sports to the arts and music, we have a great place to live.
As a councillor, then mayor, I quickly realized that we represent first and foremost, and really only, the taxpayers of the city of Flin Flon. We cannot carry these costs without the participation of all user groups. We will search for a balance that includes financial participation by our neighbours in providing services that are universal to all area residents. In a city that has reduced considerably in size, we continue to carry infrastructure with a capacity for a larger population.
With that in mind we have, as a council, strived to reduce costs we can, to level the tax burden somewhat and to search for new [sources] of income for the city. If elected, I plan to continue to be honest and open with the citizens of Flin Flon. Our council will continue to face challenges head on and cooperate fully with the Flin Flon School Division, Hudbay, Creighton, Denare Beach and residents surrounding Flin Flon.
Flin Flon has existed for 80 years with no real long-term plan. We are not only a mining town, but a service centre as well and intend to be here for a long time. Our homes are the largest investment many of us will ever make, and as such the infrastructure that serves them must be modern and well-maintained. We don’t put five-year shingles on our homes or hold five-year mortgages, so we must not follow a five-year plan. A long-term plan with long-term goals is essential.
Thank you.
Cal Huntley
Hi. My name is Cal Huntley. Most people should be familiar with me, but [for] those who aren’t, a quick snapshot is probably in order. On the personal side, I’m a third-generation Flin Flonner. I have two beautiful daughters, Sydnie and Mallory, and two wonderful grandchildren: Knox, almost seven months old, and Addisen, who just celebrated her eighth birthday. Oh, and I can’t forget my little sidekick, Snoopy – smartest little dog around. Hobbies for me include golfing, cabin life in the summer, snowmobiling in the winter, travel and community involvement.
In my community life, I have been a city councillor for 12 years and am currently serving as a director and chair of the audit committee on the new Northern Regional Health Authority. As well, I have been a director on the Community Futures Greenstone board for the past 18 years and am currently the chair of the board governing the local employee and family assistance program.
In my professional life, I am presently employed at Hudbay as the senior contracts administrator and am working on 37 years with the company, having previously held various positions, such as underground shaft inspector, dual-ticketed tradesman and an HR professional. I believe the experience and skills acquired in these and my community positions will support me in dealing with the complex technical, infrastructure, financial, political and relationship issues that Flin Flon is presently going through.
I have the utmost respect for Mayor Fontaine, but the reason I’m running is because I feel I have a unique skillset and perspective that can contribute to moving our community and my home forward in a more positive fashion. I want my community to have a legitimate choice if they are looking for a change in direction. Flin Flon is and always will be home for my family and I. Thanks.
