Forest fires in the La Ronge region had decreased significantly midweek, days after an evacuation order for the northern Saskatchewan town was lifted.

As of Thursday morning, 57 fires were burning in that region, officials said.

Earlier this month, there had been more than 65 fires in the region with a reported year-to-date total surpassing 650 fires in Saskatchewan.

Over the course of Tuesday and into Wednesday morning, the Daily Wildfire Report showed that 10 fires had been declared out in the La Ronge area with an additional three being reported.

As recently as two weeks ago the same report contained much higher numbers with new fires and lower counts of extinguished fires.

The report also states that 180 fires had been declared out in the La Ronge area as of Thursday morning.
