Anyone who has ever lived in Flin Flon knows that the community has a deep-rooted passion for that ultimate winter sport, hockey. Now word of that zeal has spread thousands of miles away to the city often referred to as the capital of the world Ñ New York City. In a recent edition of the New York Times, an article suggested that Flin Flon might be a more suitable home for the Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils. As the article pointed out, the Devils, at least on the surface, appear to be largely disregarded in New Jersey, drawing small crowds and little attention even though they enjoy unprecedented on-ice triumphs. "The Devils, despite their three Stanley Cups and their gritty resolve, would be more appreciated in Flin Flon or Kamloops (B.C.)," states the article, which appeared in the December 16, 2003 edition. In fairness to the home of the Devils, the article was written with an anti-New Jersey slant. The adjoining states of New York and New Jersey have a long-standing rivalry, and not just in the sports world. The New York Times sells about 1.2 million copies each day, making it one of the best-selling newspapers in the world.
