Northlands College held its annual Achievement Day on Friday, May 14, in the Creighton Community Hall, to honour the many students who have worked hard to achieve academic success. "We have come together to celebrate your accomplishments," said Bill McLaughlin, CEO of Northlands College, in addressing the audience. "We know it is much harder to come back to school as adults, because you come with more responsibilities. We commend you for your success." McLaughlin made a special presentation to Arnold Laliberty of Denare Beach, who was chosen as this year's recipient for the President's Award. The award is given annually to the student who shows the most determination to succeed, despite having to overcome obstacles. After dropping out of school at the age of 16 and going into the work force, Arnold eventually found his way back into the classroom, overcoming numerous obstacles, and completed his grade 12 this year. "He had the will to succeed and also had the support of his family, friends, and the college staff," said the CEO while making his presentation. "He has initiative and has grown as a student." Along with a plaque, Arnold received a $500 scholarship towards his future education. He plans to further his education to become a teacher. In his address to the students and staff, Ordean Goulet, Regional Director for the Eastern Region, said it was "an honour to see the awards given out." "I congratulate all of you from the bottom of my heart," said Goulet. Paul Ballentyne, Program Co-ordinator for Northlands College East Side, also commented on the commitment made by the students to "overcome obstacles and make it through." "I congratulate the students, and everyone who is part of the Northlands team who worked together to provide quality education," said Ballentyne. The Creighton Community hall was filled with Northlands College students from the northeast area of the province, along with teaching staff and support workers. The group enjoyed a special luncheon prepared by students from the Social Work program.
