What exactly is the Northern Neighbours Foundation? This is a regionally-based community foundation established in 1994 for Flin Flon, Snow Lake, Cranberry Portage, Sherridon, Creighton and Denare Beach. There is a board with representatives from each of these areas. Members include Joyce Mitchell Chairman; Dave Kendall (both of Flin Flon); Mary Wright (Denare Beach); Tom Stevens (Creighton); Wayne Sherwood (Cranberry Portage); Cheryl Hordal (Flin Flon); Betty Rudd (Snow Lake); Tim Matheson (Sherridon); Jane Robillard (Flin Flon) and Betty Kendall (Flin Flon) is the Executive Director. Northern Neighbours works by accumulating charitable gifts in a capital fund, which is regulated by the government, providing citizens with a means of permanently endowing their region and helping to shape its future. The board of Northern Neighbours will allocate the interest that is drawn from the initial capital with vision and care to encourage and support charities in the areas of: community service; arts and culture; education; heritage; the environment; health and medical services; recreation and sports; and mainly youth and senior programs. People may provide for gifts to the foundation in their wills. This money is for the community and stays in the community. A bequest could be in a specific amount of money, a particular property, or a percentage of an estate. Donors should consult a lawyer when a bequest is being made. A contribution can be made through a gift of life insurance naming the Northern Neighbours as a beneficiary. Gifts can also be made in honour of a living person, organization or event. or in memory of a relative or friend. The Foundation will acknowledge such gifts to the honouree or family and issue a tax receipt. The total number of grants given out last year was $68,125.
