Ottawa has given the go-ahead to a new uranium mine at Cigar Lake in northern Saskatchewan. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission recently approved construction of a new mine at the remote site, located about 387 kilometres northwest of Pelican Narrows. Mining company Cameco, which has had an interest in the location for more than a decade, hopes to have the mine in production by 2007. The mine could create some 200 jobs for up to 40 years, according to reports. Cameco spokesman Lyle Krahn told CBC that the Cigar Lake site is the second largest known uranium deposit in the world.
