Flin Flon and the surrounding area are under an extreme cold warning as of Wednesday afternoon, likely to stay in effect into late Thursday or early Friday.

The warning was called at around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, putting the area in the same boat as most of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, which have been under warnings for the past two days. Areas in both northern Saskatchewan and all of northern Manitoba are under the same warning.

In the Flin Flon area, wind chills are expected to drop into the minus-45 degree range or colder Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. Overnight lows are likely to drop into the minus-30 to minus-40 degree range in that time, with winds up to 30 kilometres an hour.

"A prolonged period of very cold wind chills is expected. Dangerous wind chill values of -45 or colder will develop Wednesday night into Thursday morning," reads the warning.

The cold is expected to disappear for a time Thursday, but will come back Thursday night, with a warm front expected for northern Manitoba starting Friday.

"Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors and those without proper shelter," reads the warning.
