Here are some of the RCMP reports from around Northern Manitoba for the past week or so: Churchill Detachment Seven files, one dangerous driving, one property damage, two disturbances, one theft, one person reported missing. Members are investigating a historical sexual assault. In other news, members were briefed last week on the preparation for Halloween night. The RCMP, DNR, Fire Department, Ambulance, Rangers, MB Hydro and Parks Canada had stationary perimeter checks, others drove in the perimeter and checked for roaming polar bears. This was all to ensure security for the town's little ones. All went well! Cross Lake Detachment Sixty-five files, 62 prisoners, 13 assaults, one assault police, one assault with a weapon, four utter threats, eight disturbances, two Mental Health Act, one Child Welfare Act, four mischief and several other calls for service. Members are continuing to focus on impaired driving, encountering one or two a week. Flin Flon/ Cranberry Portage Detachment Forty files, four prisoners lodged, four assaults, one Indecent Act, one aggravated assault, one dangerous driving, one Coroner's Act, two B&Es, three thefts, two property damage, five MVAs, two persons reported missing (later found). Halloween was quiet with lots of kids out due to the mild weather. Parents were in attendance, and everyone had a good time. Cranberry Portage had a missing hunter who had walked into the bush and couldn't find his way back. He ended up staying out overnight, and the next day searchers followed his footsteps to his location. He could hear the people searching for him, but couldn't make his way to their location. Gillam Detachment Twenty files were opened, five prisoners lodged. One counterfeit $20, one stolen property, one break and enter, two CDSA investigations, two dangerous driving, one Mental Health Act, two property damage, and a number of other calls for assistance. Gillam Detachment worked with Fox Lake Band to curb bullying on the school bus. Policy was created for disciplining offenders and a monitor was assigned to the bus by the band to ensure students' safety when going to and from school. God's Lake Narrows Detachment Eight prisoners. Two assaults, one weapons offence, one Mental Health Act, one CDSA, and other calls for service. An inland water patrol was made around God's Lake, focusing on impaired driving and bootlegging. Grand Rapids Detachment Two assaults, five disturbances, one B&E, one auto theft, five property damage, one obscene phone call, one Mental Health Act. Island Lake Detachment Fourteen files, one prisoner. One assault with a weapon, two spousal assaults, one utter threat, one theft, one suicide. Last week four hunters overturned in their boat in the Island Lake River. Two of the hunters remained missing. On October 25 members of the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team located the body of one of the two missing hunters. The fourth hunter has not yet been located. Island Lake members are still attending to calls via boats. Ice has not yet set on the big lake. Leaf Rapids Detachment Forty-two files (21 for Leaf Rapids and 21 for South Indian Lake). Five assaults, six disturbances, four Mental Health Act, four B&Es, one theft, 9 IPDA and various other calls for assistance. A steady week in Leaf Rapids and South Indian Lake. Members attended South Indian Lake School and did numerous presentations on bullying. Lynn Lake Detachment This was a busy week. Twenty prisoners and five of these were served documents upon release. Two prisoners were remanded into custody. Detachment investigated, two uttering threats, two assaults, two B.E. and Theft, three disturbances, one M.V.A., two thefts and five breaches. On a sad point, we lost a resident of Brochet. He was seen earlier in the day testing the ice checking for the thickness and later Friday afternoon he drove his snowmobile to the store and returning home he fell through. Numerous people ran over to help but couldn't reach him on time to rescue him. See 'Kept' P.# Con't from P.# Moose Lake Detachment Thirty-one files, 25 prisoners. Two spousal assault, one assault with weapon, one B&E, three mischief, one impaired, seven disturbances and other calls for service. Oxford House Detachment Forty-one calls for service and 30 prisoners. The members were kept very busy over the weekend due to the Halloween festivities and a wedding. The members attended several drinking parties, lodging 17 people in one night. The members also attended a tragic incident in the community. The members were advised that a youth had not returned home for over 24 hours. A search was conducted and the youth male was located later in the evening. Unfortunately the youth had succumbed to hypothermia. This incident is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected. The members were also asked to be judged at the elementary school for the Halloween costumes. There was a good turnout and excellent costumes, also the detachment handed out candy to over 150 children from the community. Pukatawagan Detachment Twenty-eight prisoners, 44 calls for service. One sexual assault, one assault with a weapon, five assaults, one CDSA, three Mental Health Act, three mischief, two Child Welfare, thirteen disturbances. Members also participated in judging Halloween costumes at the local school. Shamattawa Detachment Thirty-one files and 129 prisoners. Six assaults, one assault with a weapon, one firearms offence, one B&E, one disturbance, one auto theft and other calls for service. The assault was one where a woman was struck twice with an axe. Fortunately, she was not injured. Alcohol was a major contributing factor. On Halloween, many children were out trick or treating. One 15 year-old stole the Band constable vehicle and proceeded to drive at a high rate of speed, weaving around the community before striking the corner of a residence. The RCMP located the vehicle and it pulled over in front of the detachment where he was arrested and taken into custody. He had been sniffing gasoline. It was remarkable that no one was injured considering the number of children out and about! Three hundred children attended the RCMP compound and received treats from the members. Most were in costume and very well behaved. The local community worker attended to the detachment and cell area and burnt incense and smudging to eliminate the stress built up in the building over the years. This ceremony was welcomed by all! Snow Lake Detachment One impaired driver, HTA enforcement, ten trucks inspected with Highways - Compliance. On November 3 a participated in national "Take Your Child to Work Day" by having a grade 9 student work with the RCMP for the day. See 'Northern' P.# Con't from P.# The Pas Detachment One hundred forty-three files, 36 prisoners, ten assaults, five assault with weapon, two sex assaults, one Fatal Inquiries Act, four Mental Health Acts, two utter threats, three B&E, 13 thefts, two frauds, three weapon offences, two CDSA. Police checked a residence of a subject currently under charge for trafficking. As a result of the surprise check as per conditions of the recognizance police located money and marihuana. The subject has been charged with additional counts of trafficking, proceeds of crime and breach court order. Cpl. Lockhart, Gang Awareness, attended to The Pas to work with GIS and OCN police to identify gangs in the area. Additional gangs and gang members were identified with particular attention being paid to the increase in number of 10- to 12-year-old children involved. Cpl. Lockhart and Cpl. Olson also took the time to meet with the residing judges to outline the issues surrounding the gang problem. Thompson Detachment Two hundred eight-four files. One hundred ninety-one prisoners. Six sexual assaults, 27 assaults, one assault with a weapon, six utter threats, 61 disturbances, eight B&Es, three vehicle thefts, 17 thefts, 24 property damage, two possession of cannabis, three Family Orders, one Child Welfare Act, seven Mental Health Act, 27 persons reported missing, two dangerous operation, one impaired operation, one driving with more than 80 mg. On October 26 police received a report of a 15 foot python in the bush south of Thompson. Patrols located the frozen python off of a snowmobile trailer. The snake was turned over to Thompson Animal Control. The snake did not survive. Wabowden Detachment One assault, one utter threats, one complaint of discharge of a firearm (result of pre-Halloween fire works). Members of the Wabowden Detachment are back into the school and talking with the youth, arranging for junior hockey practices and joining a local league.
