Manitoba may become home to a third national park.
The 2017 federal budget announced an area on the northwest shore of Lake Winnipeg will be designated “Manitoba Lowlands National Park.”
The area is located near Grand Rapids and the junction of highways 6 and 60. The exact boundaries of the park are not yet known.
A boundary proposal from environmental non-profit group Manitoba Wildlands suggests the area will consist of two sections.
One section includes Limestone Bay and Little Limestone Lake, while the other contains Long Point, stretching from Lake Winnipeg to Lake Winnipegosis.
Efforts to proclaim the area as a national park have been ongoing for decades, with discussions first held in the 1970s.
If approved, the park would be Manitoba’s third national park, joining Riding Mountain and Wapusk.
The Lowlands are one of two new national parks proposed in the March 22 federal budget. The other, Thaidene Nene, is located in the Northwest Territories.
