Northern Manitoba chief let down by Trudeau’s $8.4B pledge

A federal plan to spend $8.4 billion over five years on indigenous Canadians has disappointed the Grand Chief representing northern Manitoba First Nations.

A federal plan to spend $8.4 billion over five years on indigenous Canadians has disappointed the Grand Chief representing northern Manitoba First Nations.

Sheila North Wilson, Grand Chief of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO), told CTV News Channel that, compared to “the amount that our communities need and, you know, dreamed about,” the dollars are “not enough.”

North Wilson added that the 30 First Nations she represents need at least $2 billion of immediate investments in housing alone, along with school upgrades, clean water and other infrastructure, CTVNews.ca reports.

The Liberal government announced the investment as part of its inaugural budget last week. It includes money for water quality on reserves, primary and secondary education, housing and health care, among others.
