Tobacco is the leading cause of death and disease in Canada, killing an estimated 48,000 Canadians annually. World No Tobacco Day is the first global event where smokers around the world will unite to break free from their dependence on tobacco. Hundreds of events and activities are being held in communities across the country. The NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority, Opaskwayak Cree Nation Health Authority, and Tobacco Tackle Teams from Scott Bateman (The Pas) and Cormorant Lake School, have cooperated to plan and promote a Non Smoking Pledge-A-Thon on Monday, May 31 to commemorate World No Tobacco Day. The object of this event is to educate the public, build community spirit with a friendly competition between the two areas in the NOR-MAN Region and develop connections of the services available to help you quit smoking. People won't be asked to submit money towards a pledge, rather they will make a pledge to quit smoking, or to remain smoke-free if they have already quit. On May 31, the local radio station will dedicate one hour to World No Tobacco Day's Non Smoking Pledge-A-Thon. This initial hour will kick off the event and get pledges started. Two teams have been set up, one representing Flin Flon/Creighton and Denare Beach (Team A) area and one representing OCN/The Pas and Cormorant area (Team B). See 'Kick' P.# Con't from P.# During the initial radio kick off of the event between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., individuals can phone in their pledge to CFAR 590 at 687-8300. After 9 a.m. and up until 4 p.m. the phone number to call will be 687-1342 at the Flin Flon Community Nurse Resource Center. The competition will also consist of the respective Mayors and/or Chief wearing the opposite town's host team hockey jersey for a day for having the least pledges in their respective communities. A great prize will be drawn for one of the people who make a pledge. So, now is the time to set your quit date by making a pledge on Monday, May 31. If you phone the first hour in the morning to the radio station, your call will remain private. You will be assisted with proper support in making this great decision!
