The Flin Flin Lions Club is being considered for a provincial award in recognition of work to enhance the lives of seniors. The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce has nominated the club for the Manitoba Council on Aging 2004 Recognition Award. "We're honoured by the nomination," said club president Wayne Streamer. "We don't seek it, we just try and help wherever we can. There seems to be a big need for helping seniors, and we're just happy to do whatever we can do." Winners will be announced sometime next month and be invited to a special ceremony in Winnipeg. The Lions Club serves the community in a number of ways, but work with seniors has always been a major focus. The club purchased the Handi-van, used by seniors to travel around the community, and the Lifeline system, which allows the elderly to push a portable button to notify the hospital if they require medical aid. The Lions also buy Christmas gifts for residents of the Personal Care Home and sing for the seniors at the Northern Lights Manor, among other initiatives. Among previous recipients is the Rotary Club of Flin Flon, which won the award last year after being nominated by the chamber of commerce.
