There simply won't be time to be bored during the upcoming Bust the Winter Blues Festival, the Chamber of Commerce heard yesterday. Cindy Davis of Creighton Recreation and Parks spoke about the much anticipated event at yesterday's Chamber meeting, held at the Friendship Centre with about 20 people on hand. She outlined the abundant agenda for the four-day festival, which gets underway a week from today, February 11, and wraps up the following Sunday, February 15. The first night will be relatively quiet, with the only event being the "Pluck-a-Duck" competition at the Aqua Centre. As the name implies, rubber ducks will be thrown into the pool and some will be randomly chosen. Whoever sponsored those ducks will win prizes. The following night, Thursday, will allow young musicians to display their talents. The Battle of the Bands will take place at the R.H. Channing Auditorium. The winners will receive a prize and the chance to open for popular local band High Noon two nights later. See 'Chamber' P.# Con't from P.# The excitement shifts to Creighton the next night, Friday, for the opening ceremonies. Events will include a bonfire, sliding and the chance for stargazers to check out a portable planetarium. The ceremonies will take place in and around the Creighton Sportex. Later that night, young people will be treated to a MuchMusic Dance Party in the curling rink portion of the Sportex. The fun resumes Saturday morning with a complimentary (though a silver collection will be taken) pancake breakfast at the Friendship Centre. The afternoon will feature the popular sled dogs races, as well as kids' events like a snowman building contest, on Ross Lake. Simultaneously, a seniors' cards tournament is slated for the Creighton Senior's Centre. The game of choice? Whist. The Bust the Winter Blues Social gets underway that evening at 9 p.m. at the R.H. Channing Auditorium. High Noon will rock the house with an array of popular tunes. Meanwhile, young people aged 15-20 will have the chance to participate in a late-night boot hockey tournament on Ross Lake beginning at 11 p.m. Saturday. The festival will wrap up Sunday afternoon with a flea market at the Sportex, a fishing derby at Phantom Lake, a snowboard competition at the park on Third Avenue in Creighton, and other events. Anyone who would like more information or who is interested in volunteering for the festival may contact Cindy at 688-8254; Aimee at 681-7542 or Jason at 687-8855. The Bust the Winter Blues Festival is the combination of two previous festivals, Flin Flon's Sled Dog Races and Creighton's' Chilly Willy Winter Festival. Also at yesterday's Chamber meeting, Jim Meyer of Clarica Financial Services Inc. gave a presentation on the merits of the Chamber's insurance plan. He said that the plan, limited to Chamber members, is sold in two categories: businesses with one to four employees, and those with five or more employees. When members sign up for the insurance plan, the Chamber receives an administration fee, Meyer noted. In addition, President Doug O'Brien noted that Flin Flon MLA Gerard Jennissen is slated to speak at the Chamber's next general meeting on Tuesday, March 2 at the Friendship Centre. As well, member Lois (Bunny) Burke encouraged residents attending this Friday's Flin Flon Bomber game to bring with them a toy to be donated to underprivileged children.
