No one was harmed in a smoky blaze that struck a Third Avenue home Tuesday night.
The home at 36 Third Avenue was vacant when firefighters arrived after being summoned by a neighbour at about 10:45 pm.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke emanating out of the eaves and flames arising from the east side of the house, said Lieut. Ashton Crone.
He said firefighters suppressed the blaze “very quickly” and ensured the flames had not spread.
Crone said it was his understanding the police determined the fire was not suspicious in nature. He did not know the cause.
For ventilation purposes, firefighters smashed in the front window of the modest, older home. A ventilation fan was set up at the rear of the house.
While firefighters were on scene, police blocked vehicular access to the section of Third Avenue between Boam and Ross streets.
The house remained standing in the aftermath of the blaze, but it wasn’t clear whether it could be salvaged.
About 20 firefighters were on scene until about 12:15 am Wednesday, Crone said, at which time the RCMP took over the scene.
