No MTS fibre optic plans for Flin Flon area

Flin Flon is off the radar for the fastest high-speed Internet service in Manitoba.

MTS says it has no near-term plans to expand its fibre optic network into the community.

“When MTS looks at a community or area, there are a number of factors considered before we commit to expanding our service reach,” said MTS spokesperson Craig Lawrence when asked for an explanation. “These include existing infrastructure analysis and network upgrade costs, capital investment requirements, market size and opportunity, and economic feasibility.”

Regions of Manitoba served by the fibre optic network enjoy access to MTS’s fastest high-speed Internet plans as well as Ultimate TV, the company’s television service.

Karen MacKinnon, a city councillor and director with the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce, said she would be urging the chamber to lobby for fibre optic service.

Touting it as “world-class,” MTS offers fibre optic service in 15 communities, including Thompson and The Pas, which gained the service three years ago.

Last month, the southern Manitoba town of Oakbank became the latest community to be added to the network.
