Residents of a Ross Street home escaped without injury last week as firefighters extinguished a basement blaze.
Fire crews were on scene shortly before midnight on Wednesday, May 3. Smoke was visible from the home’s basement.
“Basement fires are extremely dangerous for fire crews opening inside the structure,” Fire Chief Chad Cooper said in a press release. “Basement fires burn very hot, have limited access and egress and when fire reaches the floor joists, the floor above can collapse on top of firefighters.”
Some of the firefighters entered the house to search for occupants, while others set up shop in the rear of the home, using fire attack hoses to stop the flames.
All of the house’s occupants escaped the house and no injuries were reported. Damage was confined to a living room in the basement of the house.
An electrical fault was determined to have caused the fire.
