Jonas Budd, charged in relation to a standoff that ended in Sturgeon Landing in February 2015, was scheduled to appear in court in La Ronge on Monday, Jan. 25.
Budd is accused of abducting Kayla Natomagan, 17, from a home in Lac La Ronge, a northeastern Saskatchewan reserve, shortly after 3 am on February 18.
He is also accused of shooting to death Dustin Bird, 17, who was inside the home.
Media reports identified Bird as Natomagan’s boyfriend.
Budd faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping with a weapon, pointing a weapon, possessing a dangerous weapon, possessing a firearm while prohibited, breaking and entering, and uttering threats.
On Tuesday, Jan. 26, a court representative confirmed that the first-degree murder charge will be going before the Court of Queen’s Bench, with no court date set.
The Court of Queen’s Bench consists of the Chief Justice and 32 other judges who are appointed by the federal government.
The other charges against Budd will be spoken to on Mar. 7 in the La Ronge Provincial Court.
Budd remains in custody as his case moves through the court system.
