MTS has concluded that it's simply not feasible to provide cell phone coverage along a 500-kilometre stretch of Highway 6. The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce had requested the Crown corporation look at providing coverage along the highway between Thompson and Grahamdale, located just south of Ashern. "Given the small population along this route and the limited number of potential new customers, it is unlikely that MTS would ever recover its costs on such a major undertaking," stated a letter from MTS reviewed at Tuesday's Chamber meeting. The letter stated that coverage along the route, used by northerners driving to and from the southern part of the province, would require "extensive cell tower construction." An MTS spokesperson said each tower costs about $1 million to build. The sites would also require electricity, which may not be available in all areas, the letter stated. A recap of other matters from Tuesday's Chamber meeting, held at the Friendship Centre and attended by about 25 people: The members voted to renew the Chamber's membership with the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce for $278. It was noted that former Chamber president Phill Robinson has tentatively agreed to attend the Saskatchewan Chamber's annual general meeting this April in Yorkton. The members finalized details of an upcoming fundraiser in which a framed cross-stitch depicting two loons will be raffled off. The Chamber will have 3,000 tickets printed that will be sold for $2 each or three for $5. The raffle will take place in June. It was noted that the next Business Builders Association meeting is slated for this Monday, January 12, beginning at 6 p.m. at Greenstone Community Futures Development Corporation. Greenstone is based on Main Street above Movie Gallery.
