It is time for the federal government to commit to extending all-weather road access in our region.
Last week I joined with people living on the east side of Lake Winnipeg to launch a campaign calling on the federal government to live up to its commitment to help fund the East Side road. The East Side road is a lifeline for First Nations and northern communities. The Prime Minister committed to funding this vital initiative in the federal election and we’re looking for that commitment now.
There are 21 communities in Manitoba that do not have all–weather road access. The province of Manitoba has begun to extend all–weather road access through the East side road initiative.
This road is critical to northern and Indigenous communities because the existing winter road network is threatened by climate change. It is critical to accelerate the construction of all-weather road access into the affected communities.
The campaign is centred around a petition calling on the Govern-ment of Canada to live up to its commitment, partner with Manitoba and dedicate the necessary federal funding for the development of the East Side road. For copies of the petition please contact my office at 1-866-785-0522 or go to my web site at nikiashton.ndp.ca.
Let’s send the federal government a message. It is time to extend all-weather road access in our region.
