The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce discussed a mixed bag of topics at their executive meeting yesterday. Here is a recap of the meeting, held at the Friendship Centre Restaurant and attended by 16 people: A motion carried to revive the chamber's newsletter, which was previously discontinued due to media coverage of the organization's meetings. The newsletter will be designed to tout the benefits of chamber membership and present topics not covered in the press. President-elect Phill Robinson said potential chamber members aren't always aware of the advantages of joining. Chamber membership currently stands at about 95, down from last year. The chamber had no opposition to a request from author Ron C. Johnston to use information on, and images of, Flintabbatey Flonatin in his upcoming book about the Regina Pats hockey team. President Doug O'Brien noted that a hearing will be held on March 22 (9:30 a.m. at the the Flin Flon Provincial Courtroom A) to allow residents to voice their concerns regarding Greyhound Canada's proposal to reduce its bus schedule. He said the chamber will have representation and encouraged anyone else concerned about the proposition to attend. The proposal would eliminate the overnight bus from Flin Flon to Winnipeg and reduce service between here and Thompson to twice a week. O'Brien mentioned that the chamber has still not heard back regarding its request to host the 2007 Saskatchewan Chambers of Commerce annual general meeting. The members reviewed a request from Harry Hobbs of the Flin Flon Writers Guild to supply a representative to read poetry at an upcoming event at the library. The chamber will see if arrangements can be made to send a reader. A motion carried to cover the costs of sending a delegate to the Saskatchewan Chambers of Commerce annual general meeting in May. President-elect Robinson indicated his interest in attending the meeting, which will be held in Lloydminster. As per usual, a motion carried to sponsor $100 worth of commercials on CFAR during the upcoming Rotary Radio Days fundraiser for the Rotary Club. A motion carried to purchase a $50 ad in the game program for Flin Flon Minor Hockey. O'Brien noted that a representative of the Flin Flon RCMP will speak about counterfeit money at next week's general meeting. He said counterfeit tender is an issue across Canada.2/23/2005
