• The first cadet training centre in northern Manitoba has opened in Cross Lake. It will serve the members of the only Royal Canadian Army Cadet program in an Aboriginal community in Manitoba. “Opening the Cross Lake Cadet Drill Hall is a remarkable achievement for everyone involved,” said Deanne Crothers, the provincial government’s special envoy for military affairs, in a press release. “Cadets programs across the country involve youth in positive training, but few stories are as unique as Cross Lake’s.”

• Saskatchewan Transportation Company passenger fares increase by an average of 5.5 per cent as of today. The average fare increase per ticket will be $1.90 based on an average one way trip of 182 kilometres. “Like any business, STC faces inflationary pressures on our operating expenses for necessities such as fuel, maintenance and staffing,” said Shawn Grice, president and CEO of the Crown corporation.

• The Manitoba government will introduce a bill in the upcoming fall session that would see the August civic holiday be officially called Terry Fox Day to honour the late cancer-fighting hero’s legacy. “Terry Fox embodied hope, courage, commitment and strength in the face of adversity,” said Premier Greg Selinger.
