Jonathon Naylor Editor Whoever said there are no guarantees in life could have said the same about construction schedules. Officials with the Main Street park originally hoped phase one of the project, which encompasses the bulk of the work, would be done in time for the Trout Festival. With that mark not met, a new goal has been set: phase one completion by Labour Day, weather permitting. The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce learned of the new timeline Tuesday as Dave Kendall, chair of the chamber committee overseeing the project, provided a verbal update. Brick wall He noted that a hydraulic lift was on site this week, enabling workers to cap the brick wall that encompasses a portion of the downtown property. All walls and items at the park will be coated with an anti-graffiti coating, Kendall said, making it easier to remove the handiwork of spraypaint-wielding vandals if necessary. In terms of fundraising, Kendall said the committee still needs to purchase three benches. Once that is done, funding for phase one will be "pretty close" to being finished. But that will not mark the end of the fundraising effort, he said, as cash for the second and final phase is still needed. The park remains without a name, but Kendall said about two dozen suggestions have been brought forward by the public. The intent is to establish some sort of system to allow the public to vote on their favourite names, possibly in conjunction with The Reminder. The results would likely then go to the committee, who would make the final call. The park will occupy the corner of Main Street and First Avenue, the former home of the Mr. Ribs restaurant, which was destroyed by fire in 2006. Other highlights from the chamber meeting, held at the Friendship Centre Restaurant and attended by 11 people: Members agreed to tentatively host a forum for the Flin Flon MLA candidates on Sept. 13, pending the availability of a venue and the candidates. Kendall said he was asked about the possibility of the chamber organizing a forum ahead of the Oct. 4 provincial election. President Joe Buie announced that work to revamp the chamber's website is proceeding, as he has been in discussions with the website developer.
