This year’s edition of the Trout Festival will feature some diversions from the usual.
The 2018 festival will see some additions made to some familiar events, including Main Street Days and the annual fish fry.
This year’s fish fry will include an outdoor sit-down dining event at the Whitney Forum, ahead of the traditional social. A local Red Seal chef will prepare fish for the attendees, who can also take in entertainment organized by the Flin Flon Arts Council and Ham Sandwich.
Trout Festival vice-president and fish fry committee chair Melissa Richard said the plan for the event is to expand the fish fry beyond the traditional social and to appeal to a larger audience.
“We’re really hoping this takes off. We want to take the fish fry into a new realm where it’s entertainment for everybody – you can get there early, be entertained and have fun,” said Richard.
Along with the food and entertainment, Richard also plans to hold a casino night using Monopoly money at the site, with those taking part able to win items in prize draws.
“We want to bring a lot of entertainment to the festival, so that people can walk away from the festival and they’ve thoroughly enjoyed it,” said Richard.
Richard also announced plans to bring a family dance to Main Street during the festival. The event will likely be held in front of the former Flin Flon Hotel building, with musical acts and other entertainment.
“They get to dance on Main Street and have that memory, something new and interesting for the kids,” said Richard.
This year’s Trout Festival Fishing Derby is up in the air. Richard said it hinges on agreements from local sponsors.
