Flin Flonners can now tune into the nation's largest not-for-profit radio network. Native Communications Inc. (NCI) is available at 101.1 FM, offering residents an around-the-clock schedule of talk, music and news, much of it aimed at an aboriginal audience. "Flin Flon has definitely always been on our list," noted David McLeod, general manager of the Winnipeg-based station. NCI first announced its plans to enter the Flin Flon market in the summer of 2003, but the process of bringing the signal to town proved lengthier than management had hoped. More than 95 per cent of Manitobans receive NCI, and the network hopes to continue expanding into new communities. "We offer a unique service that generally would not be considered by some commercial broadcasters," said McLeod, adding that many non-aboriginals enjoy NCI. NCI first hit the airwaves in 1971 from Thompson and over the years has grown into the nation's largest non-profit radio network.
